Educated at Edinburgh College of Art, he joined the pilot scheme of the Sotheby’s Works of Art Course, worked for Sotheby’s, briefly ran the Victorian paintings department, then worked at Michael Parkin Fine Art and Wildenstein & Co.
He set up the Maclean Gallery, produced several catalogues, and in 1985 curated the first exhibition of erotic art to be held legally in the UK.
